Hi Alison, thanks for your comment. I suspect that your relatives are from the “other” Reids of Searce. My (great) Uncle George was referred to as Big George, Wee George Reid lived a few hundred metres away. The two families were unrelated.

I’ll drop you an email with some further detailed information.

You may also be interested in the collection of letters from my paternal grandfather, John Adams, during WWI. In particular, there’s a POW letter from William Lockhart of Searce to my great grandfather Isaac Reid (http://johnadams.org.uk/letters/munster-germany-i-have-not-got-any-letters-since-we-were-captured-on-27th-march/).

My great great-grandmother was Sarah Reid, a daughter (or wife) of John Reid, and my father remembers visiting Searce as a boy. He later lived at Latt House, which was also owned by the Reid family.

Having spent all my life in England, I know very little of the family history in Ireland so this website has been a real treat. Do you have any more information about the Reids?

That’s it, I think. Could have sworn I had a photo of it adn disappointed to find I don’t. The head on image (above) is a bit misleading and makes it look a little smaller than it is. Move left a bit for a better view!

I remember little about visiting. He wasn’t really set up for family visits!

I know exactly what you mean about Garvagh Hill. That beautiful green dome never leaves you. I remember the above view of the house very well too, but with your Dad’s brown Triumph Dolomite parked outside (and you Mum’s Simca?)! Anyway, many happy memories of playing in that garden with old Snowball – and Roger and Mark too of course…

By far the best meal ever. Every morsal made your taste buds come alive with all the different flavours, leaving the pallet wanting more,every mouthful being different.The service and attention to detail could not be faulted,this was a special meal for our anniversary and one we will never forget.

It’s in our nature to label things, generalize and separate them. It would be against my beliefs not to teach my children where their roots are from and not to share my beliefs with them. It may be easy to say for a parent with no specific beliefs not to label other children but it is unacceptable for a christian parent not to bring up children in christioan faith, as well as for muslim families. Leave it and let the evolution do the work.
