  1. New potatoes – in February

    February 13, 2005 by John

new potatoesWe dug these potatoes from two of our potato towers this afternoon. We had planted them on 23 August 2004, thinking it might be nice to have new potatoes by Christmas, but somehow never got round to lifting them.

Twenty-four potatoes (weighing 400 g) from an August planting of 12 tubers is probably not a brilliant success rate, but it’s nice to be able to lift new potatoes in February – it really feels like Spring is on the way.

P.S. Just eaten some of the spuds for tea. V. good.

  2. Richard & Karen’s wedding

    February 5, 2005 by John

Richard and KarenOur friends Richard and Karen got married yesterday, at apbc. I was trumpeting at the service, accompanied by Caroline on piano (Jeremiah Clarke’s Prince of Denmark March as Karen arrived and Mendelssohn’s Wedding March as the happy couple left the church). Jacqueline and I later went to the Evening Reception. An enjoyable day.

Unfortunately, as Caroline and I didn’t get out of the church until after we’d finished playing, and had put stuff away, we only caught Karen and Richard getting into the car. So I managed to cut Karen’s head off…

  3. Beautiful Saturday

    January 30, 2005 by John

After all the wind and snow we’ve been having, it was a real pleasure to have several days of beautiful blue skies, low winds and continuous sunshine.

To take advantage of this, we went for a nice walk yesterday around the Neilston Pad. (Coincidentally, Neilston is the site of the most boring webcam on the planet).

It was crisp, frosty, and sunny. We could see the tops of the mountains in the distance. Not bad for somewhere 15 minutes from home.

  4. A 24-hour supermarket that closes at 6pm – it must be Ireland…

    January 23, 2005 by John

So, I arrive at 17:25 Sunday night in Belfast City Airport, courtesy of FlyBe (20- minutes in the air from Glasgow-Belfast, following wind), and I pick up the hire car.

Tesco logoI drive to the 24-hour Tesco at Holywood to pick up tonight’s tea and a few other things.

While checking out clementines in the fruit aisle, an announcement over the tannoy:

“The store is closing in 5 minutes, would all customers please go to the nearest checkout”

I say to the nearest Tesco bloke “I thought this was a 24-hour store?”. His response: “no, it closes at 6pm on a Sunday, it’s written on the sign by the entrance”.

I thought the point of a 24-hour store was that it opened 24 hours a day, and therefore did not close. Otherwise, it isn’t a 24-hour store?

  5. Faith in human nature

Siemens phoneI left my phone on the train this morning – it slipped out of my pocket. After a mild panic at work, I called ScotRail (sorry, First Scotrail) lost property and they had the phone. Someone on the train between Hairmyres and EK had handed it in. I got it back at Central Station for a £5 handling fee. Much cheaper than having to cancel an Orange contract with 9 months to run!

So, thanks to the kind person who didn’t just pocket the phone or call their auntie in Oz.
